Ordos

↑ by Weng Fen (via)

When I was 19, I lived in China. My time there sticks with me like the smell of fried onions in a cook's apron.
ORDOS, A MAGICAL LAND in the just north of China, is a dazzling pearl in the world history and culture. That’s what it says — verbatim, in ungrammatical English — on a plaque that greets you as you enter a rotunda in the Ordos Museum. ... Signs welcome visitors to “the famous tourist city,” “the most excellent tourist city” and “the top tourist city in China.” The word Ordos itself is a kind of boast: In Mongolian, it means “many palaces.” The outside world has come to know Ordos by a different title: as a ghost city.
...
It is true that China is in the throes of a transformation without analogue or precedent. Experts say that in the next two decades, hundreds of millions of rural Chinese will move into hundreds of newly built cities — the biggest building boom, and the largest migration, in human history.

- "The Colossal Strangeness of China's Most Excellent Tourist City" for T Magazine (link)
I've never been to the city of Ordos. I am haunted by its condition. Recalling the strangeness of finding something desolate in China gives me feelings that I just can't shake. I will never forget the times I spent in places like this. My reminiscence lives somewhere between dysphoria and elation - somehow like the calm surprise of discovering a bruise as you run a finger down your leg. I can't stop thinking about deserted streets where welding sparks shower from the tops of rebar and cement sky-scrapers as they are pieced together at all hours of the night and day. I can't forget assembling around car trunk wares with friends during warm spring nights on the edge of the desert. This article and these photos have captured a feeling and a comprehension that I have never been able to convey.

Blue and Yellow

↑ Private
I took this picture in the fall. I was sitting on my bed thinking about how blue the gloaming was and how yellow the light melting in from the kitchen felt. I think this photo captures that moment perfectly. The nights were starting to frost around this time - a chill that I love, when the sharpest colds are still distant enough to feel romantic.

I love when people use the word 'underbelly' to describe the darker plane of society. Underbelly makes me feel that everything on culture's opposite side can be exposed all in one go, like flipping an alligator over. Truth is: not so.

Porch of Avalon

Stuffeddoggie, porch, sunny summer afternoon, peony bouquet, campari, sunglasses, Mists of Avalon, quiet porch day

Currently reading Mists Of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley. Currently sipping Campari + Soda. It smells like Peonies, Grass, Tar, and Homefries. There is some Yellow Pollen in my sweater. It sounds like Birds. I can hear the Neighborhood all around me.

Just returned from a quick weekend trip to Denver, USA. The air was very dry.

Observe!

I love to see the insides of a final product! So, needless to say, I am utterly amazed at this eight hour behind-the-scenes SHOWstudio production of a full work-day on the set of W Magazine's October 2012 editorial "Sweet Escape". Also, I am totally fascinated with this simple observational style of cinéma vérité.

It's refreshing to see a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the fashion world without all the stupid vanity and frenetic post-production riffs, soundbites, and quick cuts. I am interested in fashion culture well enough, but what I most appreciate is its craft. Editorials are vast appreciations of clothing as art. This is what I love about fashion: the ways that we present, admire, and wear clothes.

      (via SHOWstudio):
"Karlie Kloss dies an elegant death in Nick Knight and Edward Enninful's arresting couture editorial for W Magazine. The pair drew inspiration from the kind of macabre, nightmarish illustrations that litter childhood fiction, offering up a vision which is part Grimm's fairy tale part mature Parisian opulence. The final images - which see Kloss clad in the best haute couture from A/W 2012, including pieces by Dior, Givenchy, Chanel and Iris Van Herpen - straddle dark and light, combining symbolism that is both sweet and sinister.
Continuing his exploration of contrasts, Knight juxtaposes the delicate vintage-look images with pithy modern 'death app' films that see Kloss suffer various violent deaths, all while clad in couture. The striking images in this editorial mark of the start of Knight's investigation into fashion illustration."

Pairs [no.1]

It's a new year! For your enjoyment... here are four pairs of pictures! I'll be doing little installments like these throughout the year - I tend to try and associate images with others when I see them, so this little project is sort-of a representation of the way I mentally archive and enjoy media.

behind the scenes of WEIRD GIRLS ep.7 by Sara Vilbergs, Iceland. pink bodysuits, two girls dressed in white with esoteric hats, glacier, weird neon pair
