Put me in, Coach

Who says you need to wear "exercise clothes" to work out? Theoretically, if you're exercising in something it then becomes exercise clothes? I really like this outfit because it's got the appropriate stuffeddoggie 2/3 ratio; two things one way, one thing the other. In this case,  you've raided a huge football player's duffel, stolen his underwear and track bottoms, and replaced them with your own skirt and stockings. He will be so surprised when he goes to get dressed for practice. You can watch his reaction via military binoculars from a mossy hillside .4 km away.

Milla Animal Féminin

Once upon a time on the internet, I ran across a picture of whom I thought to be Milla Jovovich wearing brown makeup and some tiny orange getup while acting like a wild animal. It was so weird. The image made me laugh and I couldn't forget it. I finally tracked down all the pages to this amazing shoot and can now put all the pieces together - here is Milla Jovovich photographed by Anette Aurell for Jalouse Magazine [issue#2 June/July 1997]. Maybe someday I'll translate the article (pg.1, pg.2). Other credits look to be: Bathing Suit / Vivienne Westwood, Makeup / Rosemarie Swift, Hair / Johnathan Connelly, Stylist / Annett Monheim.

Cool how you can see a YSL advert on the reverse side of one of the pages. I love magazines.

Orange Ya Glad

Spring is coming, it's almost here! This winter was dark and brutal, like an enchanted sword made out of black ice. Everyone on the island got sick at the same time this year, myself included. Everybody died! (Just kiddin'). Collectively,  everyone seems as excited as I am that the sun is getting stronger and that our bodies aren't laying prone on scraps of carpet in freezing makeshift quarantine tents. (Not really, that didn't happen).

And Everything Nice

☺Sugar and Spice! This is an awesome behind-the-scenes photo of the Spice Girls on the set of their music video "Say You'll Be There". Also, how awesome is the harmonica solo in the middle of this song? I'm not even kidding... To just, like, totally nerd out on the 90's right now - lazy harmonica seemed to be everywhere - and it expecially reminds me of the soundtrack of one of my favorite video games of all time: The Legend of Dragoon (1999).

Also? There's this little beauty. I've always loved this picture. What is the deal? While searching for this photo's back-story, I ran across this lovingly (creepily?) compiled and fascinatingly thorough Female Celebrity Smoking List. I do love a great archive. Especially a totally weird one.

Björk

Here she is, the queen of Iceland! Björk Guðmundsdóttir! When the days are so dark and short up here on the island I start eating lots of gjetost and lighting candles all the time.
Björk's 1992 MTV Cribs house-tour of her Icelandic nest is awesome. She has this enormous and beautifully modern chandelier with blue taper candles in her living-room. As she lights the candles for the camera she chirrps and trills:
"I think this big room definitely needs a center-point, you know? And a light in the middle... I think chandelier is a heart of every home and in the winter its, like, dark - It's dark almost twenty hours a day. It's quite amazing how these candles can - they actually [light] up the whole flat and in a nice kind of way."
I love how her possessions have been curated.  Everything is special!

Little Trouble Girl

Director Mark Romanek's video for Sonic Youth's "Little Trouble Girl" is so beautiful. The combination of 90's colors and 70's Los Angeles topped by the feeling that you're watching the entire thing with your face pressed up to a surveillance TV screen is so perfect. Kim Gordon and Kim Deal (The Pixies, The Breeders) are such languorous beauties!  Their voices and stares remind me so much of the listless teenage musings of the Shangri-Las (1, 2, 3).

Once, right around the time that we started playing Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, my brother and I spent an afternoon aimlessly searching a large abandoned cooperate office building for ammunition, red and green herbs, and infected zombies. Groping around the doorways of windowless offices searching for a light switch was just about the creepiest thing ever... but sometimes, a few bars of eerie wavering fluorescent light would flicker on and my desolation would blossom into the weirdest most indescribable feeling of awe.
As I walked around kicking white ceiling tiles and tripping on tangled telephone wires, I thought about how impractical Jill Valentine's outfit was and wondered what the office was like when people still worked there.

Teens, Dentists, Olympics

Kerri Strug's coach Béla Károlyi seems to be a very intensely passionate man, like he probably insists on things needing MORE INTENSITY a lot. 1996 was the year that my dentist kept insisting that I looked just like Dominique Moceanu as I received a filling without novocaine.

I love the Chemical Brothers' music video for Elektrobank directed by Spike Jonze.  Sofia Coppola's sidelong glances remind me a lot of a young stuffed doggie, sitting in a dentist chair.
